This is a gamejam entry for https://itch.io/jam/mini-jam-86-sports and came a long way short of what I was hoping to do in the weekend. I'm afraid the layout isn't usable unless it's fullscreen, for now.

A football game with a difference, it's set in the apocalyptic, irradiated future where life is short and anyone can breed together to keep the population alive. The game will continually simulate matches for your team with 'no stopping' (the theme limitation of the jam). You are placed in a league of other teams, and the game will simulate match events leading to a winner in each match, and a league leaderboard tracks this.

Not all of your players will be in a match at once (only 5, in fact), and the remainder will breed (with 'no stopping'), and any of your players might die at any point.

When your players breed, their offspring will be based on the average of their player attributes, so by choosing which players are in a game and which are breeding you can control (to some degree) the future of your team. You can swap players between positions on the pitch and the breeders at any point.

Different simulated actions in a match rely on different player attributes:

  • Passing uses Strength and Aim
  • Saving uses Reactions and Coordination
  • Intercepting passes uses Speed and Reactions
  • Shooting uses Strength and Aim
  • Receiving a pass uses Reactions and Speed

As your team breeds and dies you'll be required to continually shuffle who is in the match to ensure each position is covered and there are 5 players in it - choosing players with good stats makes you more likely to win, but also affects which players are left to breed. If you breed beyond the 15 player limit, you'll have to send a player away.

The game ends when too many players have died to be able field the 5-player requirement for a match. At game end you'll be told your win/draw/loss stats - how many games can your team win before they die off?
